Chun In-gee wins the US women’s Open Golf Championship
This professional golfer from South Korea is popularly known as Gee Chun. This is her first time participating and winning the U.S. Women’s Open Championship. Something like this, that is, a debutante winning the biggest championship for women’s golf, was seen only back in 2005, when Birdie Kim also debuted and won the championship.
And Gee is only 20 years old! Such great talent and at such a young age...
She won this Championship on Sunday against Amy Yang, who was leading in the first three rounds but started falling behind through her middle round. This was the third time in four years that Yang has participated in the U.S. Championship.
Gee won it all within a margin of just 1 stroke. She had a very good start and was steady throughout. Yang comprised a 12ft putt at No.11 and that was only the third shot she missed during the whole game. Gee shot a birdie at her 12th, coming within a stroke to win.
This was an intense game for the audience and viewers, particularly during the last 4 shots - everyone was holding their breath to see who would win.
Gee’s overall score was a record 272; an achievement for Annika Sorenstam in 1996 and Juli Inkster in 1999.
Chun In-gee was seen as the underdog; her three consecutive wins in other championships in Korea and one in Japan gave her enough boost to come in quietly, albeit, confidently, to win. She played every moment to the fullest!
